How much raw food should I feed my dog?
Use our raw dog food calculator to work out a daily amount for your adult dog or puppy, then see how many 454g rolls that is each week.
Raw feeding calculator
Work out your dog’s daily raw food
Based on 454g rolls. A starting point only: weigh your dog every couple of weeks and adjust.
The quick answer
Most adult dogs eat 2% to 3% of their ideal body weight in raw food each day. A 20kg dog with a normal amount of exercise needs about 500g a day, which is just over one 454g roll. Puppies need much more for their size, from around 8% of their current weight at 2 to 4 months, dropping towards the adult amount by 12 months.
Feeding percentages at a glance
| Your dog | Daily amount | Example: 20kg adult |
|---|---|---|
| Less active, older or needs to lose weight | 2% of body weight | 400g |
| Normal daily walks | 2.5% | 500g |
| Working, sporting or very active | 3% | 600g |
| Underweight or in heavy work | 3.5% or more | 700g |
| Puppy age | Daily amount (of current weight) | Meals a day |
|---|---|---|
| 8 weeks to 4 months | About 8% | 4 |
| 4 to 6 months | About 6% | 3 |
| 6 to 9 months | About 4.5% | 2 to 3 |
| 9 to 12 months | About 3.5% | 2 |
Puppy percentages are a guide. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly and usually need the lower end; toy breeds can need more. As a cross-check, a growing puppy should rarely be fed more than 2% to 3% of its expected adult weight in total each day.
How to use the result
- Use ideal weight, not current weight for adults that are over or under weight.
- Split the daily amount into two meals for adults, and three or four for young puppies.
- Weigh your dog every two weeks for the first couple of months. If you can no longer feel the ribs easily, cut back by about 10%. If ribs and hips are showing, add 10%.
- Count treats and chews. Raw bones, necks and dried treats all add up, so trim meals on heavy treat days.
Turning grams into rolls
Our Birmingham Raw rolls are 454g each, so a dog eating 450g to 500g a day needs about one roll a day. Rolls defrost overnight in the fridge and keep for 48 hours once thawed, so dogs eating half a roll a day can be fed from the same roll for two days.
| Daily amount | Rolls a week | A pack of 15 lasts | A pack of 30 lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250g (10kg dog) | 3.9 | about 4 weeks | about 8 weeks |
| 500g (20kg dog) | 7.7 | about 2 weeks | about 4 weeks |
| 750g (30kg dog) | 11.6 | about 9 days | about 2.5 weeks |
| 1kg (40kg dog) | 15.4 | about 1 week | about 2 weeks |
Packs of 15, 30 and 45 rolls work out cheaper per roll than buying singles, and if you want the lowest price per roll, our Economy 60 box is the best value. See all raw dog food.
Questions
How much raw food should a 10kg dog eat?
About 250g a day at 2.5% of body weight, or 200g to 300g depending on how active the dog is.
How much raw food should a 30kg dog eat?
About 750g a day for a normally active adult, which is around 11 to 12 rolls of 454g a week.
Do I feed raw food by current weight or ideal weight?
Feed adults by their ideal weight. Feed puppies by their current weight and recalculate every week or two as they grow.
Is the calculator suitable for puppies?
Yes. Choose the puppy age band and it uses a higher percentage. Feed puppies a complete raw food, not single minces, and talk to your vet if your puppy is a large or giant breed.
Do I need to add anything to a complete raw food?
No. Complete 80/10/10 and complete-with-veg rolls are balanced on their own. Single minces such as tripe or chicken mince are complementary and need to be mixed with other foods.
